72 killed in riots in South Africa / South Africa News



The death toll in the ongoing violence across the country in protest of the imprisonment of former South African President Jacob Zuma has risen to 62.

Police said in a statement that protesters were looting shops and shopping malls in different parts of the country. So far 1234 people have been arrested. News AP and Al Jazeera.

Troops have been deployed to help police stop the violence.

A video released by the BBC shows a child being thrown down from a building in Durban. The shop was set on fire after looting on the ground floor of the building.

South African police say 12 people have been identified as instigators of the violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa called the violence the worst in South Africa since the 1990s. He called on the people to remain calm.

Violence erupted across the country in protest of the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma. The violence started last Saturday.

Zuma was sent to jail on July 8 for contempt of court. Protests erupted in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

It then spread to Alexander, Johannesburg City, Japis Town, Germiston, Pietermaritzburg, Fordsburg, Debiton and Actonbill.
